The
Associative Base
AIFO
is a grass root, popular and democratic organization. The democratic
and participatory organizational model of AIFO is rare among
non-governmental development organizations, where members’
participation is linked with professionalism of its structures.
The
basic peripheral unit of AIFO is an AIFO
Group. AIFO groups can be very different, some with a few members
or very large with hundreds of members. Some groups are recognized non-profit
organizations in their own right, registered with local
governments of their areas, while others are more informal. The group
members, also called AIFO volunteers, as all must work without any remuneration
for AIFO, come from different backgrounds including
office workers, housewives, retired persons, priests, etc.
AIFO
groups are organized in Regional Assemblies
and Regional Coordination offices and elect their regional delegates and regional
coordinators. Delegates to AIFO’s National
Assembly come from both individual groups as well as from the
regional assemblies. AIFO’s National Assembly meets at least once
every year and is the supreme organ of the organization, deciding the organizational
strategies.
At present there are 58 official recognised groups of AIFO with 1019 group members or AIFO volunteers (data from
November 2007).
Board
of Directors
Every
three years, National Assembly of AIFO elects the Board
of Directors. At present, AIFO’s Board of Directors is composed
of 7 persons, out of them 4 doctors, one school teacher, one retired
university professor and one retired engineer. Dr
Francesco
Colizzi is the President of Board of Directors and there are
two vice-presidents – Ms. Emanuela Minotti and Prof. Luigi
Gravina. The
Board takes all the decisions about use of funds according to the
strategies approved by National Assembly.
The
Board meets almost every month, though major financial decisions are
mainly taken in November and June of each year. Last elections for
AIFO’s Board of Directors were held in May 2005 and the next
elections are due in May 2008.

AIFO is organised in different
offices including international projects (under Dr Giovanni Gazzoli),
administration (under Mr. Nicola Negrelli), communication and fund
collection (under Mr. Filippo Ciardi), general secretariat (under Ms.
Tiziana raisa), development education (under Ms. Monica Tassoni),
scientific & medical support (under Dr Sunil Deepak), information
