Background

The basic premise of this initiative is that disabled persons, especially the persons with chronic conditions that require on-going or periodic medical care, should play a more active role in their own care. With this premise, the project looks at empowerment of persons with disabilities in relation to their active participation in their own care.

The project proposes that a new paradigm of health care is needed for better organisation of health services to answer long term needs of persons and at the same time, promoting empowerment of persons with disabilities:

  • Professionals involved in health care issues of persons with disabilities need to play a more supporting role so that persons with disabilities learn about their own health issues, take greater role in their self care. In this process, by adding a facilitating role, professionals can work in a better way in areas that require their professional skills.

  • Persons with disabilities associated with chronic health care issues have the possibility to be more in control of their own lives by learning about their own bodies, and by acquiring skills of self care.

The initiative involved pilot projects in different parts of the world in Asia, Africa, South America and Europe.

This initiative was launched during the last part of 2005. Some of the projects received some funds from WHO/DAR. As a research initiative the project was completed in December 2007, though some individual projects needed to complete the activities after this period.
