My mother and I do not directly represent any specific organization, other than for my family, the Hutchison family. My name is Monica Bacon and my mother’s name is Mercedes (or Mercy) Hutchison Bacon. My great-grand uncle (my great-grandfather’s brother), Ambrose Hutchison, was a patient at Kalaupapa and a very close friend of Father Damien. My uncle wrote about life at Kalaupapa and about his relationship with Father Damien, and our family is very humbled by and yet proud of what he and the others had to endure there. Uncle Ambrose lived at Kalaupapa for about 53 years, from 1879 (at the age of 20 years old) until he died there in 1932 (at the age of about 73 years old). Right now I don’t have a photograph with me of myself and my mother that I can send to you in JPEG format, but I can email you one later this week. If we are asked to be interviewed, the only language that my mother and I speak fluently is English.

I am also a member of the Ka ‘Ohana O Kalaupapa organization, but I am not an officer of the organization nor have I been asked so far to represent the organization while in Rome-I believe that Anwei Law or others who will also be in Rome will be doing that for the Ka ‘Ohana O Kalaupapa organization.
