CBR must maintain close links with specialised institutions such as medical rehabilitation centres. Above, a physiotherapist with a disabled child in Mongolia CBR programme.

Models of Rehabilitation Service Delivery (1) - Institution-based Rehabilitation (IBR)

IBR is carried out in specialised institutions with specialist staff. Usually such institutions are based in big cities.

Special rehabilitation hospitals and centres, special schools, vocational training centres for disabled persons, etc. are some examples of such institutions.

In situations such as persons with very severe disability, or some complication that requires medical intervention, institutional services may be required. Institutions are also necessary for referral services. They are also necessary for supporting community-level services.

In developing and poor countries, the high cost for running such institutions can be a problem so that they may lack specialised personnel or equipment. Their capacity and access may also be limited.
