First let us
think about how persons can become dis-empowered.
Priya is 16
years old. She was four when she had polio. She went to the
primary school near her home for a few years, but it was
difficult for her to climb the stairs or to go the bathroom by
herself. Her mother had to stay in the school to help her
daughter. After a few years, she stopped going to school.
She moves with the help of a
stick and helps her family with house work. She does not have
many friends and few opportunities, as she can not go out of
the house.
Perhaps you
will agree that Priya has very limited actual
choices in her life and can not take many decisions
regarding her own life. Thus her empowerment is limited.
