LEPROSY:  RECOGNISING & MANAGING REACTIONS (3)

Multibacillary cases (MB) presenting with nerve damage at time of diagnosis of leprosy are at greatest risk of developing a reaction

Who can get a leprosy reaction?
Almost all persons having leprosy infection are at risk of developing a reaction.

The risk is lowest in persons with 1-2 patches and without any nerve enlargement. The cases diagnosed as PB without any nerve damage at the time of diagnosis of leprosy have less risk.

PB cases with some nerve damage at time of diagnosis and MB cases without any nerve damage at the time of diagnosis have about 16% risk of developing a reaction.

MB cases with nerve damage at the time of diagnosis are at the greater risk, about 65%, of developing a reaction.
