I
have just read the messages relative to the use of the morphological
index (MI) in leprosy.
I
do use the MI in patient with high bacteriological index (BI) in order
to monitor the efficacy of the treatment. A good technician can do it
without much of a problem and in a relative short time. Dr David
Scollard suggests (lml Jan. 26th 2005) the use of radio-respirometry
for determinations of viability of M leprae; I frankly do not
know what a radio-respirometry is and, I doubt that it is cheap. For us, in
India
, the laboratory technician time is ‘cheaper’ than any
equipment.
At
any rate I do believe in MI and I do use it regularly; if done
properly it is still useful and cheap.
