Leprosy mailing list – December 17th, 2005

Ccn:     all.

From:   V Andrade, Brasilia, Brazil.

Dear Dr Noto,

In PAHO web site (leprosy) we have useful links which show the texts of the global strategy we've translated in Spanish and Portuguese (and summary in French).
http://www.paho.org/Portuguese/AD/DPC/CD/lep-who-global-strategy.htm

We suggest other leprosy web pages in Portuguese in collaboration with Ministry of Health (Brazil) and partners with general information about leprosy for decision-making, epidemiological surveillance and for the inclusion of the Leprosy Elimination activities on the national and international agenda and to
strengthen the political commitment of eliminate leprosy in Brazil.

1)
Index Page for Leprosy: The PAHO Leprosy Page lists documentation on
leprosy in English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese, as well as other
relevant links:

http://www.paho.org/Project.asp?SEL=TP&LNG=ENG&CD=LEPRO.

In PAHO Brazil:

http://www.opas.org.br/prevencao/site/temas.cfm?id=52&Area=Documentos
This page has been an important means of updating and disseminating information on cooperation activities.

Index page of the Ministry of Health:

http://dtr2001.saude.gov.br/svs/destaques/hanseniase_cartas_2005.htm

2)
Online leprosy database: The SINAN Leprosy database, run by the
Ministry of Health of Brazil, is available at:

http://hanseniase.datasus.gov.br/hans/hans.htm. It enables users to create their own queries for Tabnet and makes it easier to understand and use the data.

3)
HANSWIN, a software system developed to identify inaccurate data and
update files, as well as to provide two-way feedback between Brazilian states and municipalities.

4)

The Leprosy Elimination Network:

http://conasems.org.br/hanseniase2 is being designed in collaboration with CONASEMS to provide morbidity data to help each municipal manager motivate integration of leprosy services into basic health care, diagnosis and treatment.

5)
Standard and Distance Training: Training material is available through workshops on best practices and on measurement tools/instruments on the leprosy situation. Such training has been offered to responsible health officers in 25 of the 27 Brazilian states, along with a self-instruction manual at:

http://www.paho.org/Portuguese/AD/DPC/CD/lep-auto-instrucao.htm

6)
Telemedicine is used as to provide long-distance support in diagnosis and treatment, as well as medical education. The Cyberambulatory and Leprosy Distance Education Center will increase access and contribute to the process of integrating leprosy into basic health care and teach different communities as well as professionals working in the pediatrics, gynaecology and neurology.

Simultaneous incorporation also includes modern 3D computational graphics tools for an educational approach: the "Virtual man".

7)
ELEP-INFO: (
http://shp.paho.org/DPC/cd/elep-info/default.aspx)

is a collaborative electronic space making all of the above IT tools available to the general public via the internet, and where various partners can participate in the elimination activities in a synchronized, collaborative way.
