Dear Dr Noto,

We have attempted to refresh the memory of your readers by collecting excerpts from LMLs and other sources including the media, voicing the opinion of experts on the above subject (given as an attachment in MS Word document).

For a long time there was no convincing response from the WHO spelling out policy statements in the background of current leprosy scenario that will assure clinical care of the patients already under treatment or after “release from treatment”. We learn that the recent WHO/ILEP document called “Global Strategy for Further Reducing the Leprosy Burden and Sustaining Leprosy Control Activities (Plan period: 2006 – 2010)” prepared at a joint meeting held on 14-15 February, 2005 in London emphasizes the need to “strengthen routine and referral services” and “to develop tools … for the prevention of disabilities/ impairments and for the provision of rehabilitation services” etc.

As all lml readers may not be aware of the latest global policies, we wonder whether it will be possible for you to circulate this document and announce these through your valuable medium of LML.

Thanks,

Dr R Ganapati, Dr VV Pai and S Kingsley
