Leprosy Mailing List – November 5th, 2006

Ref.:     Training materials for leprosy

From:   Plomp H., Nigeria

Dear Salvatore,

Only recently I saw the mail of Dr. Charles Phaff (LML Sep. 10th, 2006) on a new text book on leprosy.  I would like to comment on his suggestion for the need of a Leprosy Teaching guide.  I very much agree with him that there is a need for standardized leprosy teaching materials.  It is good to read that they are working on that in Mozambique.

I also think it is good to inform everyone that the National Leprosy and Tuberculosis Training Centre in Zaria, Nigeria, has developed a lot of materials for teaching in leprosy.  There are curricula and lesson plans for the training of doctors, leprosy supervisors, nurses and general health workers.  Everything is based on and connected to the National Manual of the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme (NTBLCP) in Nigeria.

The above materials have been in use for some years now and are frequently updated based on experiences of facilitators and assessment of the knowledge of the students.

Interested people can contact the Training Coordinator of NTBLTC: Dr. Mustafa Gidado.  His email address: gidadomansu@yahoo.com.au  .

I am sure the materials which are in English can be of great help to a lot of projects.

Regards,
