Dear Salvatore,

Thank you for the article about leprosy in India (Douglas Soutar, LML Dec 1st, 2006).  Is there any way that we can get this sort of information out across the world!

As a worker with Leprosy Mission I have got extremely tired with people saying: - You do not need money for leprosy, WHO says it is eliminated.  They do not realize the subtlety of the new WHO definition!

As far as I am concerned the “Elimination” statement has done more to set back to control and management of leprosy that anything else that I know.  We are certainly not going to really eliminate leprosy in this century.  Even after Small pox effective vaccine was discovered it was hundreds of years before we could say it was eliminated.  We have no vaccine for leprosy the only control is find it and treat it.  WHO is now telling people to not even Go and look to find it.

Fascinated in the statements as to how common it is in India!  I know of lots of relapses but because they do not strictly fit into WHO classification they are not reported.  WHO is making us all live under a delusion.  How can we break these misconceptions!

Grace Warren

Worker in leprosy since 1959!  And the work is not getting less!
