Ref.:     Leprosy situation; trend in case detection

From:   Ogbeiwi O.J.I., Garki, Abuja, Nigeria

Dear Noto,

Looking at the trends presented in the graphs you sent (LML, May 8th, 2006), it is clear that the decline in global case detection since 2001 reflects more the situation in the South-East Asia region.  In Western Pacific and East Mediterranean regions, the decline has been steady since1997.  No apparent decline is visible in Africa and Americas regions.  In fact in the Americas, the trend suggests a steadily rising case detection over the years.  Overall, this set of graphs shows how the changes in case detection in the SEARO influence the picture of leprosy globally!

Hence the recent policy change to passive and more flexible case detection practices in India should be a cause for concern to all parties interested in the true control of leprosy disease in the coming years.
