Ref.:     ILEP Technical Commission request for feedback on the need for a new text on leprosy.

From:   Lord S., London, UK

Dear Dr Noto,

One of the core responsibilities of the ILEP Technical Commission is to ensure that there is adequate provision of high quality teaching and learning materials on leprosy in the field.   In addition, it is felt that the future sustainability of high quality leprosy services requires that good training material is available at medical schools and other training establishments.

The ILEP Learning Guide How to Diagnose and Treat Leprosy is widely used for training purposes. The texts on Leprosy by Bryceson and Pfaltzgraff and Hasting have also been widely used, but both these texts are now out of print.

The Commission has become aware that some lecturers have found that there is a lack of material on leprosy, and it has therefore contacted a number of experts about the possible requirement of a new text.  The feedback so far shows that there is indeed enthusiasm for a new clinical multi-authored text.

We would appreciate any feedback on this question from those with recent experience of or who are currently involved in lecturing to medical students on leprosy, so that the Commission can make a more informed decision on whether to recommend the writing of a new text.

With my best regards,

Susan Lord
