Ref.:     Can leprosy skin lesions heal and disappear, under treatment, in 3-6 months?

From:   Narasimha Rao P., Hyderabad, India

Dear Dr Noto,

With regards to the  query whether leprosy hypo-pigmentation and lesions disappear in few months (Dr  Felly Mukalay J.; LML June 22nd, 2006), it was already been answered that “it can happen” by our fellow members.

However, if the emphasis is to know false cases from true cases, if the site and location of patches were recorded initially, the patches still retain their hypo-aesthesia even when they merge with the surrounding normal skin in few months time.

I was also interested in the comments of Dr. P K Das (LML - June 23rd, 2006) who wished that in "endemic regions and in nearby labs, the  immuno-staining  should be set up as an integral part of leprosy control and follow up" to separate false from true cases.

Now, with the present status of leprosy programmes,  there are no facilities to get skin smears (or periodic photography or even body charting) in most regions of endemic countries and states.  To get graded nylon filaments is in it self a big task.  How can one aspire for immuno-staining?

With best regards,

P. Narasimha Rao
