Leprosy Mailing List – September 6th, 2007

Ref.:     Editors of periodicals in leprosy, a tabulation view (see attachment)

From:   Meyers Wayne M., Washington D.C., U.S.A.

Dear Dr. Salvatore Noto,

I congratulate you on initiating the Leprosy Mailing List, providing a most valuable service that nourishes the cohesion of the family of those touched in various ways by leprosy, a family that in recent times has become somewhat fractured.

I have two suggestions to add to the Periodicals in Leprosy List:

1.  Leprosy Briefs, Volumes 1-13.  Published monthly by The Leonard Wood Memorial (LWM) from January 1950-December 1962.  Editor, James A. Doull, M.D., Medical Director of the LWM, Washington DC.

The Leprosy Briefs were compiled, extensively indexed and published by the LWM in a single volume by Chapman H. Binford, M.D. in 1967.  (Note:  The first 6 monthly numbers were entitled "Notes from the Medical Department," and thereafter as "Leprosy Briefs.")

In my opinion, lucky is the person who has this practical and erudite volume in his library.

2.  Leprosy Scientific Memoranda.

Published regularly by the U. S. National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, in the 1970's and 1980's.

I do not have the particulars of this valuable series of publications at hand as I write, but I will attempt to provide this information to you.  I have most of them archived somewhere and hope to uncover this treasure of information very soon.  In its pre-internet time, it provided a resource and service to those in the field of leprosy patient care and research in a manner somewhat analogous to your helpful current series, Leprosy Mailing List.

It is always a pleasure to read each of your communications.

With best wishes,

Wayne M. Meyers, M.D., Ph.D., D.Sc.
