Leprosy Mailing List – January 17th, 2007

Ref.:     drastic reduction” – biologically not possible or biologically not impossible?

From:   Reddy B. N., Kathmandu, Nepal

Dear Dr Noto,

Perhaps I have to respond to Dr P K Das's message.

"Biologically impossible" was the comment made in the context of reported leprosy new case detection reduction (drastic !!!) in India.  That implicitly puts a question mark on the credibility of the Indian NLEP and the integrity of the thousands of workers and hundreds of officers of Central and state health services of my country.

Until recently I was one of them and am proud about it even to day.  This motivated me to respond by way of raising few arguments that will give my country's programme a benefit of doubt.

Drastic reduction in leprosy is unlikely.  Probability low or may be very low.  But  biologically impossible I do not think so.  May be I am wrong.  That is why I did put it as a question and sought answer & explanations so that I will be better and correctly informed.

I would like to convey my sincere thanks to Dr Das for his (near) mid night message.

Thank you Dr Salvatore Noto.

Dr B N Reddy.
