Ref.:   Possible neuropraxia due to improper/too long application of tourniquet
From: Jerry Joshua, Kolkata , India

Dear Dr Noto,

I refer to Angelica Piefer’s message (LML Jan. 23rd, 2010).

The usual cause of paralysis, if adequate precautions were taken not to injure nerves while tunnelling (which in your cases is out of question as the pattern of paralysis shows that the nerve injury is at a higher level than that of the surgery) will be a tourniquet that was too tight.

The paralysis due to a tight tourniquet usually recovers over a period of time (between 3 months to 6 months).  The patient should continue with active exercises and muscle stimulation to prevent atrophy.

Regards,

Jerry Joshua
