Ref.:   (LML) Possible neuropraxia due to improper/too long application of tourniquet

From: James P. Wilton, Portsmouth , NH , USA

Dear Salvatore,

I refer to Angelica Piefer’s message (LML Jan. 23rd, 2010).

It is my experience in over 25 years of extremity surgery that neurapraxia is most likely caused from insufficient padding underneath the tourniquet and/or improper placement of the tourniquet.  When tourniquet times are limited to 90 minutes or less, I have not experienced neurapraxia as an adverse sequela from extremity surgery.

Sincerely yours,

Dr. James P. Wilton, FACFAS
